Texinfo is a documentation system that uses a single source file both for online information and for printed output. Using the Texinfo documentation format, you can create a printed document with the normal features of a book, including cross references and indices. At the same time, with the same document, you can create an online Info file with nodes and menus, and the electronic equivalent of cross references and indices. You can also create an HTML output file for use on the web.
You can typeset a Texinfo file for single-sided or double-sided printing; you can use any of several different sizes of paper; virtually any terminal display can be used with the Info output; virtually any web browser can be used with the HTML output.
This manual describes Texinfo. It tells you how to create chapters and menus, footnotes and indices, and both numbered and unnumbered sections and appendices; as well as tables of contents, automatically numbered lists, and other parts of an essay, novel, or technical manual. It includes a complete short sample Texinfo file. It explains how to typset and print hardcopy, and how to create and install an Info file.
All the software associated with Texinfo is free.
